The committee of the King’s English Society is seeking a FREELANCE CONTRACTOR to assist them in establishing the Society as a point of contact for opinion, information, and help in using the English language, and the main force galvanising every sector of society into improving the quality of spoken and written English in the interest of optimal clarity, empowerment, and influence in communication and expression.

The Position

  • reports to the Chair/Vice Chair
  • is part-time (20 hours a week, flexible)
  • is based on an initial 12-month service contract;
  • remote working;
  • commences immediately following appointment subject to references;
  • contracted monthly fee of £2,000 per month.

Key Responsibilities

Need to do:

  1. Initiating, developing, and maintaining relationships with individuals in the media;
  2. Managing the KES website and other social media platforms including the production of content, blogs, and podcasts on English language matters;
  3. Contributing to discussion forums online;
  4. Increasing the Society’s membership;
  5. Responding to queries from the public on matters of English usage.

Nice to do:

  • Sending a continual stream of good-quality and relevant articles to publications;
  • Running competitions that will attract the attention of teachers and their pupils;
  • Devising and operating an information system that disseminates information about the KES to the educational world;
  • Initiating, developing, and maintaining relationships with individual civil servants at the Department for Education.

Person Specification

  1. An excellent advocate of the Society’s philosophy and aims;
  2. Good communication skills and command of spoken and written English;
  3. Experience of website design and management, social media, creating online content, blogs and podcasts;
  4. Ability to take the initiative and devise and implement innovative, practicable ideas in the pursuit of the Society’s objectives;
  5. Ability to work effectively to timescales and meet deadlines.
